This is a shortened translation of the paper “Sobre el número de Erdős” (Spanish) [Lecturas Matematicas, Vol. 17, 163–179 (1996)] in which the author presents selected information about Paul Erdős, his close collaborators and their coauthors. The editor added a short note with a list of Czech and Slovak mathematicians whose Erdős number is 1, i.e., of those who published a joint paper or book with Erdős.
