Semi-presentations for the sporadic simple groups. (English) Zbl 1087.20025

A semi-presentation for a group \(G\) is a set of relations which characterizes a set of generators of \(G\) up to automorphisms. In this paper, the authors discuss some techniques for finding semi-presentations and illustrate them by exhibiting semi-presentations of the 26 sporadic simple groups and their automorphism groups. Then they show how these semi-pesentations were used to check the data in their previous joint works [R. A. Wilson et al., ATLAS of Finite Group Representations (2004; http://mat.bham.ac.uk)].
