This book is designed for a first course in applied statistics and probability for undergraduate students in engineering and physical or chemical sciences. Readers will find the content of the book to be useful in engineering problems solving and decision making. The text is divided into 16 chapters.
Chapter 1 is an introduction to the field of statistics and its applications. Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 cover the basic concepts of probability, random variables, distributions, expectations and independence. The next chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to random sampling, data description, sampling distributions and point estimation. Confidence intervals, hypotheses testing, and statistical inference for two samples are discussed in the next three chapters. The next four chapters contain linear and multiple linear regression, correlation and design of experiments, including the analysis of variance. Nonparametric statistics is considered in Chapter 15. Chapter 16 is devoted to statistical quality control.
There are a large number of examples and exercises for each chapter in the book. Two appendices are included: Statistical Tables and Charts (12 tables), and Answers to Selected Exercises. Glossary and references to the proper Web sites are also available.
