The classification of spaces or mappings have been an important subject in general topology. This book aims at presenting systematically some major results obtained since the 1960’s (particularly those obtained by the author and other Chinese scholars) on classifications of generalized metric spaces from the viewpoint of mappings. The first edition of the book was published in 1995 (see [Generalized metric spaces and maps. Beijing: China Science Press. (1995; Zbl 0940.54002)]), and was used as a graduate student textbook by some Chinese universities since then. In contrast to the first edition, the present edition contains some new material, such as solutions to some open problems in the first edition, new open problems and new advances since 1995, a new appendix on the formation of the theory of generalized metric spaces. The updated version remains a good reference book for graduate students and researchers.
