Falkovich, Gregory Fluid mechanics. A short course for physicists. (English) Zbl 1271.76001 Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (ISBN 978-1-107-00575-4/hbk). xii, 167 p. (2011). This book describes some basic types of fluid flows using the elementary interplay between nonlinearity, dissipation and dispersion in fluid mechanics. The book contains 4 chapters. The first chapter, “Basic equations and steady flows”, presents fundamental notions and describes stationary inviscid and viscous flows. The second chapter, “Unsteady flows”, deals with instabilities, turbulence and acoustics. The third chapter describes dispersive linear and nonlinear waves, solitons, collapses and wave turbulence. Each of these chapters ends with some exercises. The last chapter contains solutions to the exercises from the previous chapters. The epilogue of the book surveys the present-day activities in fluid mechanics.
