A topological approach to unifying compactifications of symmetric spaces. (English) Zbl 1288.53043
Compactifications of symmetric spaces received considerable interest in recent years. This paper describes a compactification of symmetric spaces which is constructed from the compactification of a Weyl chamber; then it is sketched that the the visual boundary, the maximal Satake compactification, the maximal Fuerstenberg compactification, the Karpelevi\(\check{c}\) and the Martin compactification are special cases of the compactification studied. In an addendum a generalization of the Busemann compactification is presented.
