On a general equation with no solution in large integers. (Sur une équation générale insoluble en grands nombres entiers.) (French. English summary) Zbl 1325.01035

Summary: We give a translation of the author’s article [Christiania Vidensk. Selsk. Skr. 1908, No. 7, 15 p. (1908; JFM 40.0256.01)], also available in [the author, Selected mathematical papers. With an introduction by Carl Ludwig Siegel and a biography by Viggo Brun. Oslo: Universitetsforlaget (1977; Zbl 0359.01021), pp. 219–231], from Norwegian to French. (The original article is written in riksmål, literally the “language of the realm”, which in 1929 was renamed bokmål, the “language of the books”.) We chose to keep as close to the original style, structure and phrasing as possible. If a change has been introduced to modernize the presentation, a footnote indicates this change. All the notes in this translation, both linguistic as well as mathematical, have been made by the translator.
