The ergodic maximal inequality for actions of \(\mathbb{R}^{+}\) preserving a \(\sigma\)-finite measure is derived from the so-called ‘Rising Sun Lemma’ of F. Riesz [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 7, 10–13 (1932; Zbl 0003.39201)].
