The critical load and the post-critical equilibrium behaviour are determined for a rod supported by Cardan joints at its ends and subjected to torsion and tension. The study is based on the equation for virtual works treated by the perturbation method. The method is developed in a general way without any restrictions concerning the title problem; it can be applied to the determination of initial post-buckling paths and imperfection sensitivities of structures.
