This is a collection of lectures presented in a special course organized by “International centre for mechanical sciences”, Udine, Italy. Contents: 1. Introduction to damage mechanics, by D. Krajcinovic; 2. Statistics toolbox for damage and fracture, by A. Hansen and S. Roux; 3. Molecular and particle simulations, by D. Krajcinovic; 4. Measurement and damage parameters of brittle disordered media like concrete and rock, by J. Van Mier; 5. Micro-crack clustering, non-local and gradient models, by G. Pijaudier-Cabot; 6. Premises to a multifield approach to stochastic damage evolution, by P. M. Mariano. Mainly statistical physics method are used to study the effects of random distributed microcracks. On balance, this is an interesting and useful contribution.
