Summary: Tangent number and its meaning in mathematics are analyzed. The studies of some Western mathematicians, such as Schlomich, Andre, Estanave, Schwartz, Toscano, Entrenger and Knuth, and the creative work of Chinese mathematicians in the Qing Dynasty, such as Xu Youren (before 1840), Dai Xu, are introduced. The research work of Li Yan and Luo Jiangjin on this aspect are also reviewed.
