Fragoulis, D.; Skembris, A.; Papaodysseus, C.; Rousopoulos, P.; Panagopoulos, Th.; Panagopoulos, M.; Triantafyllou, C.; Vlachopoulos, A.; Doumas, C. Origins and application of geometry in the Thera prehistoric civilization ca. 1650 BC. (English) Zbl 1104.01002 Centaurus 47, No. 4, 316-340 (2005). By studying the geometric figures present in wall paintings found in Akrotiri, on the island of Thera, the authors come to the conclusion that the aritist must have meant to draw Archimedean spirals, hyperbolas, ellipses, as well as 48-, 32-, and 24-sided regular polygons, pushing the beginning of Greek geometry to a much earlier date than the times of Thales, to around 1650 BC. Colour reproductions of the the extant fragments accompany the text. Reviewer: Victor V.
