On the definition of normal numbers. (English) Zbl 0042.26902

Ist \(R\) eine reelle Zahl und \(\bar N_r(b, n)\) die Häufigkeit, mit der die Ziffer \(b\) \((0\leq b\leq r-1)\) in der \(r\)-adischen Darstellung von \(R\) in den ersten \(n\) Ziffern im Bruchteil von \(R\) auftritt, so heißt \(R\) einfach-normal in bezug auf \(r\), wenn für jedes \(b\) \[ \lim_{n\to\infty} \bar N_r(b,n) =1/r \tag{1} \] ist. \(R\) ist normal (1. Definition), wenn \(R, rR, r^2R,\ldots\) einfach-normal in bezug auf \(r, r^2, r^3, \ldots\) wird. Daraus folgt leicht: Ist \(\bar N(B,n)\) die Häufigkeit, mit der irgendeine Folge \(B\) von \(\nu\) Ziffern in der \(r\)-adisehen Darstellung von \(R\) in den ersten \(n\) Ziffern im Bruchteil von \(R\) auftritt, so ist \[ \lim_{n\to\infty} \bar N_r(B, n)=1/r^\nu \tag{2.} \]
Mehrere Autoren haben (2) als Definition für eine normale Zahl zugrunde gelegt (2. Definition). Die Verff. zeigen nun, und füllen damit eine wichtige Lücke aus, daß aus der 2. Definition die 1. Definition folgt. (Mit dieser Frage hat sich auch S. S. Pillai beschäftigt [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Sect. A 12, 179–184 (1940; Zbl 0025.30802)]. Dies ist nicht selbstverständlich, und der Beweis der Verff. ist auch tatsächlich nicht einfach.
