Graffi, Sandro; Degli Esposti, Mirko Discrete mathematical physics. (Fisica matematica discreta.) (Italian) Zbl 1035.00002 Unitext. Milano: Springer (ISBN 88-470-0212-5/pbk). x, 247 p. (2003). The book is meant to introduce undergraduate students to some aspects of the modern theory of dynamical systems, without assuming significant prior knowledge of analysis or algebra. The relevant required notions about sequences, series, probability, random variables and linear algebra are introduced along the publication. It is essentially a self-consistent presentation written in a plain and clear style, with lots of worked out examples, interesting observations, hints to numerical applications and nice historical notes. Focusing on discrete dynamics in one and two dimensions, and in particular on the logistic map, the authors succeed in introducing and putting to work many important mathematical concepts, pertaining in particular to the theory of dynamical systems.
