Extending R. (English) Zbl 1355.62003

Chapman & Hall/CRC The R Series. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press (ISBN 978-1-4987-7571-7/pbk; 978-1-4987-7572-4/ebook). xvii, 364 p. (2016).
This book can be used as a manual for using R and provides help, which is much needed due to the recent rapid growth in the development and applicability of R, the programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. The book shows the large expansion of the software (more than 7,000 packages are available). It first describes the fundamental characteristics and the background of R. It is very useful to extend R’s data structure through object-oriented programming, which is the key technique for coping with complexity.
The scope of the series is wide, covering three main threads: (i) applications of R to specific disciplines such as biology, finance etc. (ii) using R for studying topics such as linear modeling, logistics modeling, time series, Bayesian methods and missing data, (iii) the development of R, including programming, using data mining such as Big Data, or the connection to Python. It enables current and future users to add their own contributions and packages to R.
