Robert Steinberg, collected papers. With foreword by J.-P. Serre. (English) Zbl 0878.20002

Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS). xx, 599 p. (1997).
The volume contains all of Steinberg’s published papers on group theory, a total number of 40 papers, which appeared between 1951 and 1997. Not included are 8 early papers from the 50’s on various topics and the notes “Lectures on Chevalley Groups” of a course given at Yale University in 1967/1968, which are now being prepared as a book.
The edition is complemented by a Curriculum Vitae, a Bibliography and by 18 pages of “Comments on the Papers”, written by Robert Steinberg himself. These contain minor corrections and clarifications, indications of further developments after the publication of the papers as well as biographical sketches, which provide an interesting glimpse of the working mathematician Steinberg. The comments on the paper “Prime power representations of finite linear groups. II” [Can. J. Math. 9, 347-351 (1957; Zbl 0079.25601)], in which Steinberg studied the now famous Steinberg representation, are more extended and supplement J. E. Humphreys’ article “The Steinberg representation” [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 16, 247-263 (1987; Zbl 0627.20024)] on the same subject.
