Aspects of time-dependent second-order differential equations: Berwald-type connections. (English) Zbl 1037.53009

Kozma, L. (ed.) et al., Steps in differential geometry. Proceedings of the colloquium on differential geometry, Debrecen, Hungary, July 25–30, 2000. Debrecen: Univ. Debrecen, Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. 283-293 (2001).
The paper is a survey of an elaborate study on Berwald-type connections [T. Mestdag and W. Sarlet, Houston J. Math. 27, 763–797 (2001; Zbl 1003.58005)]. It explains the general framework for understanding the subtle differences between several related SODE-connections (connections associated to systems of second-order equations) and for describing accurately the significance of the “Berwald-type” notion in a time-dependent context.
