J. Good’s estimator [Biometrica 40, 237- 264 (1953; Zbl 0051.371)] is proposed to estimate the coverage of a random sample from an unknown multinomial distribution. Some properties of the proposed estimator are derived. This generalized estimator retains all good properties of Good’s estimator and has smaller bias if each cell probability is less than 0,5. The results of a simulation study are reported to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of other existing estimators.
