(Stepan Prokof’evich Timoshenko. 1878-1972). (Russian) Zbl 0757.01027

Nauchno-Biograficheskaya Literatura. Moskva: Nauka. 240 p. (1991).
This book is a first in the excellent Nauka series of mathematical biographies, in that its subject is a Russian scientist who emigrated after the revolution. The work of Timoshenko in elasticity theory is well-known and sufficiently appreciated in the West. It is rather unusual in that it was also highly esteemed in Russia, even during the time of Stalin. Many of Timoshenko’s works written in English were translated into Russian and published in the USSR. The author has done a creditable job of telling the story of Timoshenko’s life and work.
