Auckly, Dave Solving the quartic with a pencil. (English) Zbl 1134.12001 Am. Math. Mon. 114, No. 1, 29-39 (2007). The text presents a nice, easy to read and easy to follow deduction of the solution of the general quartic equation by using the notion of “pencil”, classical in algebraic geometry. As a by-product, the reader is offered a walk through different aspects of complex projective algebraic geometry and symplectic manifolds.Reviewer’s remark: It could be a good exercise for Mathematics students at the University with a certain background in geometry, to read and try to understand the paper by themselves. Most of them should succeed.
