Johann Heinrich Lambert, mathematician and scientist, 1728 – 1777. (English) Zbl 0376.01009

Summary: means of an algebra of signs are centered to his work in formal logic. Section III is concerned with experimental physics, especially with his researches in optics, in the theory of errors and his use of graphs, in magnetism, and in the science of heat and meteorology. The next section deals with his work on astronomy and cartography. The fifth section deals with mathematics.
In these four sections the authors try to give a survey of his complete work with a view to highlighting its inter-connections and its inconsistencies. But much remains to be done, for example Lampert’s manuscripts are still not completely edited. The appendix refutes some statements of N. I. Styazhkin who according to the two authors’ words may have done these mistakes, because he attempted to make Lambert more modern than he is.
